Why 'Weird Al' Yankovic Works and Lil Dicky Doesn't
-
Creativity. The simplest way I can describe it is creativity. Even in parodies of pre-existing songs, Yankovic manages to pull through with much more creative and comedic experience than you would with a Lil Dicky song, who just copies the latest trends at the time and, when he knows you’re about to fall asleep listening to one of his songs because of sheer boredom and numbness, he just blurts out random nonsense to keep audience retention up. Weird Al doesn’t need that and neither doesn Lil Dicky. I’ll admit, Dave has talent and we’ve seen it before. Here, check this shit out.
Hear that? Actual potential? Actual NATURAL drive and promise? He doesn’t need to make unfunny music because he’s already proven he can make, at least, DECENT unironic music. Same can be said about his appearance on the 2016 XXL Freshman Cypher. To tell the truth, even if we’re just talking about comedy, Lil Dicky has the potential to be on the same level as Weird Al, but because he wants to be Slipknot and purposefully make bad music to get dropped from his label, although he doesn’t. It’s a choice, and whether it’s meant to be funny or not, it isn’t. It just sucks.
