J. Cole dropped a surprise album/mixtap/whateverthehellhewantstocalliteventhoughitdoesntreallymatterbecausetheprojectwasmostlyforgattableasidefromtwothings(thesecondofwhichiwillgettolater) and the final track on this album is called ‘7 Minute Drill’, which is a “”“”““diss track””“”“” that responds ton Kendrick Lamar’s verse on the song ‘Like That’ off of the Future and Metro Boomin . Firstly, the song isn’t even seven minutes long, secondly, a lot of these lines are REALLY out of place to be on a diss track. While lines like, “Your arms might be too short to box with the god”, and. “A Falcon 9 inside my pocket, bitch, this rocket gon’ fly/Now it’s poppin’ outside like the top of July” are pretty good, you got these, in Anthony Fantano’s words, “Eminem-ass bars” like, “Put pictures in my home, aim the chrome at your eyelids/Fly pebbles at your dome, we the Stone Temple Pilots”. Also, this track just blatantly lies. “Your first shit was classic, your last shit was tragic/Your second shit put n****s to sleep, but they gassed it”. While I agree that ‘Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers’ wasn’t really Kendrick’s BEST (although I still really liked it), To Pimp A Butterfly being BORING is a FUCKING LIE. Not ONLY has this caused the biggest switch-up on ANY album I have ever seen on Twitter/X/GoHaveADie, but the criticism of ANY of Kendrick’s music being boring has been levied at J. Cole for YEARS, so it just feels like he’s projecting his own insecurities on somebody else. While listening to this track, I could tell Cole’s heart was just not in making a diss track. He calls it a warning shot but I feel like he only did this because, in his own words, “My text flooded with the hunger for a toxic reply”. He clearly didn’t really want to do this but rather just did it out of obligation anyways because of MFs goin’ “NoW, mE pErSoNaLlY…” sigh… sigh sigh sigh, sigh sigh, sigh… sigh sigh… sigh…
