(Controversial?) why do people who live in the USA call themselves "Americans"?

      My only guesses are:

      1. The presidents are egotistical and think that the country is the only one of the American continent
      2. It’s just a shortened term

I live in the USA and have wondered why back in like, 2023 or 2024? But even then I had a habit of calling them Americans just like other people of my country, and still do.

(NOTE: I don’t mean to offend anyone, I try not to, if I do I deeply apologize and I will never make posts like this again)

because it’s just easier to say “American” than “United states of American”, the latter of which would be very silly. you don’t hear people from the UK being called “united kingdomers” do you?
