THIS IS FOR A SCHOOL PROJECT.

Vida (Podría Haber Sido Divino) by K. Jay

      I’m leavin’ you.
You’ve never seen me as equal.
You never treat me like your family
      Or other people.
      You only judge me.
      Not for character
      But for appearance.
      It’s apparent
You think I’m not worthy of respect.
      I just don’t get
Why you like to push me around.
      You treat me like Jenga;
You build me up and knock me down.
What happened to the first time we met?
You said that you loved me,
Now all you do is just shove me
And act like you’re above me.
      You call me bummy.
A good for nothing goof of a human.
      A waste of space.
      A dishrag not worth usin’.
It’s obvious you have it out for me.
      That’s all that I know.
      Why, though?
Maybe ask the homeless man down the road.
His guess is as good as mine.
      Our future coulda been divine.
Now we’re destined to fued for the rest of time
      And nobody knows why.
All I ask is you give me a reason
      For all the beefin’
'Fore I go off the deep end.
As I’m in this hole, it deepens.
It’s your response of which I depend.

      Vida
      Podría haber sido divino.
      Así que alguien tenía que
      Empieza una pelea.
Ahora estamos luchando día y noche.
      Día y noche.
      Día y noche.
      Día y noche.
      Día y noche.

      I’m leavin’ you.
      Don’t dare make accusations.
Don’t have me look at your face
And let that be the last thing you say when
We’re together in our last moments.
Before I leave, I want you to know that
      You’re a scumbag.
      A piece of tissue that
      Belongs in the toilet.
      You say it’s about appearance?
I think your mind needs some clearance.
      It’s your lack of perseverance.
Either adapt or get left behind.
Get used to it or be left to die.
      I think it’s best if I
Get the knife and cut the bull.
I guess there’s no point to deny.
      You’re ugly.
A good for nothing broke boy
Who has to mow lawns for a livin’.
      Although it’s not his fault,
The world loves to restrict him
      Simply based off his looks.
      No, it goes deeper.
I truly wish that were the truth but
You know this isn’t true neither.
Believe it or not, I have a heart.
I know I’m just like you.
I know I’m just meant to fight you
With no reason or rhyme to
      Justify my actions.
      No matter,
I still look down on you.
      We’re now it two.
      Despite the same community,
      We lack basic unity.

      Vida
      Podría haber sido divino.
      Así que alguien tenía que
      Empieza una pelea.
Ahora estamos luchando día y noche.
      Día y noche.
      Día y noche.
      Día y noche.
      Día y noche.

I think I know why we can’t be together.
Not because of age or weather
      Or grades or sweaters.
It is because of how I look.
You think I look funny, don’t you?
      Oh, won’t you
      Cry me a river
As you sing that same old tune.
There’s no truth to what you say.
You haven’t been honest since the day
      We met in the rain,
      No.
      Now you got me here
      With nothin’ to say except
You’re the reason we’ll never be united.
      It’s always been you,
No matter how much you change the light.
It pains me to see you defend yourself
      With a pitiful lie.
I see it in your eyes,
For this is merely a disguise.
For, I know what lies beneath,
      The reason we can’t be together;
As long as you lights look down on dark Puerto Ricans,
      We’ll feud forever.

      You look down on us
For our skin color and dialect.
We come from the same tribe,
      Taino, so why’s it that
You white Puerto Ricans look down
      On those who speak different.
      Surely it’s not about wording,
But rather the content within it.
      If you’d listen,
You’d know that this ain’t right.
      Just because you’re white
Doesn’t mean you can pick fights
      With those who aren’t light
      In your own family.
      A community that should
      Understand unity.
We should be helpin’ each other out
So what with this crap we’re doin’ to each other,
      And by association ourselves?
      It really doesn’t help
We’re not in the condition to be feudin’ as well.
We all eat pasteles and plantain,
      So why can’t we contain
This unjust hatred of the people
      Of which you relate?
