Blood is splattered on the floor and on some men standing around. I look at the person, motionless on the floor, Burd. Blood is flooding like rainy days out of his chest. Immediately falling to the ground around him. I caress his cheek and put my hand on his stomach, he is not breathing like he usually does. Taking my knife, I force my knife into the threads of his black shirt. It works, making an unzipped jacket-like look. His pants are bleach white. Moving his arms, and managing to get his shirt off. The cut is all the way from Burd’s lower throat down to his stomach. I am sad and disappointed in myself for letting this happen. I should’ve been there for him. Maybe I’m just not good enough. . . Falling thousands and thousands of feet. I don’t know how Burd got here. I don’t know how I got here. I want to be back. I put his shirt on the cut, making the bleeding stop. I am scared. People are laughing at me. Something put its arm on my shoulder. I whip back around with my knife ready to stab anyone willing to touch me. No one is there. All of the people are backed up, and the laughing fades. The colors and clarity worsen making it almost impossible to see what they are. I am falling into the abyss. The men and bar fully disappear. Black, like the night sky but there are no time travelers. And there are no wales dancing. There is no comforting ship. There is no sleeping Burd. Where am I? I take a huge breath in, letting icy water into my lungs. I am drowning, but this time, there is no escape. Burd is not here to save me. I am truly scared. The darkness consumes my hope and love for everything. My body shuts down, numb. Falling for a long time. Losing track of time. Time is nothing. This tunnel will never end. Sure of it. Mind, wandering down alleys I never knew were there. Is this even real? Many hallucinations are in the way. Blocking the path to freedom. Trapped in a terrible fantasy world. Suddenly, warm arms wrap around me. A bright light shines through my closed eyelids. Soft whispers of calming words dance gracefully into my ears. This is Burd’s voice. It is smooth as silk. It must be afternoon or close to the evening by the slow crash of the waves against the boat. He holds me on his lap like a baby, gently rocking me up and down. My nerves seem to calm down enough to feel safe. It was just a dream. Waking up more, slowly opening my eyes I see the walls of my room. Burd can tell I’m awake and squeezes me into a tight hug, refusing to let go. Turning my head to the side, I see a black shirt covered in something red. A long scar runs down his chest. My memory comes back, it wasn’t just a dream. . . I was lost and he saved me. . .
