kitkatgirlie So, the whole ā€œbite = springlock failureā€ theory seems to be making the rounds again, meaning that I must, once again, stop all work on the finer details of my version of the timeline, in order to explain basic mechanics to a bunch of people who would go out of their way to write a novel-length explanation of how ā€œsurviving an accidentā€ only requires you to have lived for some period of time beyond the accident, even if the period of time is extremely short, and even if the accident is ultimately what cut it short. This novel would come complete with 2 pages of cross-referencing, a quote from a professional source, and at least 3 uncalled-for personal insults directed toward any individuals who disagree, and possibly also toward those individuals’ parents.

                        So, here goes [again.]

Springlocks are not difficult to understand. Believe it or not, most of what they do is explained right in the name. They lock springs- that is, they restrict the motion of a spring or spring-loaded mechanism. In the case of the springlock suits, this spring-loaded mechanism is the mechanism that pushes the metal endoskeleton into ā€œanimatronic mode.ā€ Note that neither the spring-loaded mechanism, nor the endoskeleton components attached to the mechanism, are considered to be ā€œspringlocks.ā€ They are rather, collectively, the springs, which the springlocks are tasked with locking in place when the endoskeleton is in ā€œsuit modeā€ (when the endoskeleton components are compressed against the sides of the suit, so that a person can wear it).

Now to describe what happens when a springlock fails.

When a springlock suit has a springlock failure, it means that the springlocks have failed. According to the fairly straightforward warnings in the audio tapes, when the springlocks fail, the spring-loaded endoskeleton components spring into animatronic mode. Thus, we can deduce that the spring-loaded mechanisms are at their least-compressed state when they are holding the endoskeleton in animatronic mode. Conversely, we can also deduce that these same mechanisms are at a more-compressed state when they are holding the endoskeleton components in suit mode, and when the springlocks are needed in order to lock the springs in this higher-tension state.

In simpler terms, the endoskeleton prefers to be in animatronic mode, prefers not to be in suit mode, and given the opportunity, will gladly spring out of suit mode to be in animatronic mode. Such force and tension exists behind this enthusiasm, that Zeus have mercy on any mortal unfortunate enough to be in the suit when the springlocks fail. There’s enough force to pierce flesh and crack bone behind those springs.

Or, at least there is when the endoskeleton is in suit mode.

So how on earth is anyone supposed to put this thing into suit mode in the first place? This is where the handcrank and springlocks come in.

The handcrank is a separate device which fastens onto some component of the spring mechanisms and which, when turned, pulls them away from their least-compressed state (ā€œanimatronic modeā€) and into their more-compressed state (ā€œsuit modeā€), where the springlocks, likely moved by something attached to the crank mechanism, then latch onto the endoskeleton components to keep them fastened to the inside walls of the suit in suit mode, and to keep them from springing back into their most relaxed state (animatronic mode).

The handcrank is there, most likely, because it’s either extremely difficult, or actually mechanically impossible, to manually push each individual endoskeleton component out of animatronic mode and into suit mode. The amount of force behind the springs that hold the endoskeleton parts, helps to confirm this.
