The infernal beast’s jaws clamped down on his throat.
He expected to die, yet his eyes opened.
The Asilvestrela was gone.
He shifted, pulling himself from the ground. The beast was completely gone. Along with the grass and the sky and everything.
All that was left was a sky of swirling masses of darkness and light and an invisible ground that felt cold beneath his talons.
His head throbbing, he gingerly touched his neck, expecting a gaping wound, yet nothing was there. Panicking, he checked his arms, his wings, any place where he could possibly be injured. Nothing. Was he dreaming? Did he die? He turned in a wobbly circle, unable to comprehend his surroundings.
The Sang Toare froze.
Some… thing stood before him.
Supported by two legs, it stood upright. Its arms held a strange black orb with a white cut in the middle. Two massive wings thrust out from its back, which he immediately recognized.
Angelic, the Warden of life and death.
Resisting the urge to pass out, he stared at the being he had only heard of in stories.
It looked different than what he imagined, considering he was a creature of blindness…. No, he could see the Warden. Fear washed down his body, his wings trembled. How could he see if he was blind?
“Why am I here?” he demanded, his voice wavering horribly.
The being spoke, a sound like thousands voices mixing together. Some screaming, some whispering, all different. “You are Drake, are you not?”
He replied, quiet and fearful, “I… am. Why— why am I here?”
He squeezed his eyes shut as the thousand voices spoke once more, and his ears rang in horrendous pain. “You killed Boreal’s advisor.”
“I— I did?”
“Vatu, Boreal’s chosen one. The Jotunhel.”
Expecting to be killed on the spot, he was almost pleasantly surprised when the ethereal being went on. “Yet you lived a life of good. You fought valiantly for your loved ones, you cared deeply for them, you led a normal, model life. You killed Vatu, and Boreal conjured the Asilvestrela to kill you. Before my fellow Warden could steal your soul for their own and torture you for all eternity for your crime, I stepped in. I convinced them to allow you to be given another chance.”
“Another chance?”
“You wish to die and ascend to the Empyrean, yes?”
“I do,” he said quietly.
“Boreal has decided you will be given another chance at life. You will be reincarnated and given a task. Your task being to kill Toko, a murderer of Eigion’s advisor.”
The Warden raised its hands, the eye it carried floating into the air. A blinding light shone from the pupil, casting a ghost-like figure of a Saukuryn before him. Drake reached out to touch it, entranced by its otherworldly glow, yet his talon passed right through it. Unnerved, he pulled away.
“You will hatch and be raised as a regular creature. Your soul will be sent down to that vessel, with your memories intact. Essentially, you will be gaining consciousness.”

Soft grass pressed against his side. A cool breeze gently wafted across his scales. Despite not wanting to leave the comfort of the ground, his eyes cracked open. He blinked once, twice. Colors seemed to jump out at him, sounds roared in his ears. He scrambled to his feet, terrified of all the sensations.
Memories of the Warden and his mission lit up his head. Pain throbbed behind his eyes as he squeezed them shut. Colors were too bright, too much. His mind seemed to shut down as he stared at the grass, practically burning holes through it with his gaze. What… what was this color? He reached out, brushing a talon across the grass. He froze, staring at his arm. It wasn’t his. It couldn’t be! This arm was reptilian and scaled when it was supposed to be feathered with razor sharp talons!
His vision swam as his breath quickened, his talons grabbing at his head. No, he didn’t have talons anymore, these were claws. He squeezed his eyes shut, tears dripping into the dirt. He let himself cry, not caring how much time passed. When his headache subsided and his breathing slowed, he looked up. The colors were still a lot, but not as painful to look at as before. The sun was setting, setting the sky ablaze and turning the forest dark. He sighed in relief as the sun finally disappeared behind the horizon, casting the forest into darkness.
His panic returning, he scrambled to his feet. If the sun had set, then nocturnal predators would soon arrive. He had to find shelter, and fast. He put one foot in front of him, then promptly collapsed as he moved forward. Great, thanks to this new body of his, he’d have to learn how to walk all over again. Deciding walking was too much, he dug one talon into the ground in front of him and dragged himself forward. He dragged himself to a small ledge where an abandoned den lay. He curled up in the den, a glowing crystal casting a gentle orange glow. His eyes closed and he let sleep consume him.

speaking rambunctious things no human being
desired to ever know
i was racked by dismay, fear, panic
i couldnt help it anymore
