The War of the Worlds novel by H.G. Wells was written in 1897, and was the first alien invasion story ever written. Martians invade Earth in giant 200 foot tall Tripod fighting machines, torching the resistance and using our blood as fertilizer for the alien vegetation known as the Red Weed. The Martians are later killed by bacteria, something they were not prepared for when they came to Earth.
