There is a real demo of Sonic 1 from 1990, nearly an entire year before the first game ever released. It is a simple piece of lost media where people recall it being a simple game without the spin attack for the jump, just the run animation. No robot enemies, just odd goblins of cartoon design. A Green Hill Zone without loops, just hills.
It is a story of how you watch your own world slowly fade into unreadable noise.
You are Sonic, and you cannot die in game due to it being a mere demo. You cannot progress, for it is but a demo. Your world does not change. It is just a demo.
An incomplete world to be in forever. It becomes purgatory. But then, a shimmer of light! The world is changing, textures are vanishing, but it’s not good. The code is corrupting due to dust collecting internally, rotting your world like a parasite. Your own sprites vanish like holes in your own body. You’re falling apart.
You’re dying, slowly. But it won’t become real death, you will just live with the rest of the new horrid world. A new collection of randomized sprites and data. Mold is growing on the cartridge. Your body is melting into the land.
The cartridge is rattling in boxes. Your small side scrolling world is having an Earthquake. Each rattle and jolt in your universe is like being stabbed everywhere at once.
This is life now, until somebody crushes it and puts you out of your misery. But what’s this? Everybody is gone. You’re mere garbage in a dump and you don’t even know about it. Patience has turned into depression long ago.
The planet will be swallowed by the Sun in billions of years. Billions years left to rot into a single sprite with your enemies, your world, your text… everything.
And this, is what he sounds like…
