That’s because they’re called palomitas for short, they’re usually (and formally) known as palomitas de maíz
What Google fails to demonstrate is that -ita denotes a smaller classification of an object in Spanish
So palomita = little pigeon whereas paloma = pigeon
Edit: Forgot to mention they’re las and la respectively, not el
