silly dialogue (angsty as fuq)

(blah blah blah arguing before)
“Just fucking tell me, then! Maybe I act like I don’t care because I really do, and when I come back, I want to see how you feel! Maybe I get hurt to feel how it is to be cared for again! I’ve been their puppet for years, god damn it! But if you want me out so badly, fine. Don’t cry if I don’t come crawling back to you.”

“You’re not leaving,” he mutters. His tone is firm, no room for arguments.

“Fucking watch me,” she growls. She snatches up her things from the floor, heading for the door, but he’d already blocked it so she can’t get past.

“No. Not after what you said. Not when I know you mean the opposite.” His voice is soft. Gentle. She hadn’t heard him like that before.

“What the hell do you mean, the opposite?! I said what I meant, and I meant what I said! What part of that don’t you fucking understand?!” She tried to push past him, but he didn’t move.

“You’re not trying to leave, you’re trying to make me stop you. Every time you come back here, bruised, bleeding, bringing me garbage like it means something—you’re begging for attention. For me. And now you say don’t cry if I don’t come back? That’s not a threat.” His voice drops down to a whisper. His tone still oh-so-gentle. “It’s a plea.”

“You don’t know that, because you don’t know shit about me!”

He doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t…pull away. Just…stands there, accepting her words for what they are.
“Then why do you always come back? Why bring me stupid shit no one wants? Because you want someone who sees you. And guess what, Red? I see you. I see you and all your futile attempts at lying. I see the pain, and the spark in your eyes when I get frustrated with you. So yeah, I see you.”

“You don’t see shit, and you never have! Don’t fucking tell me that!”

He goes quiet for a long time. And slowly–reluctantly–he releases her arm, hissing with contempt. Tiredness.
“Fine.” His voice isn’t angry nor mocking. “Believe what you want, Red. I won’t stop you this time. Just don’t expect me to be here when you finally decide I do see you.”

She pauses. Freezing, unsure.
“What do you mean by that?”

He doesn’t look at her. He’s turned away. His voice is cold. Final.
“Exactly what it sounds like. I’m tired, Red. Tired of chasing someone who keeps running toward the abyss… then acting surprised when no one’s behind them. If you want to leave? Go. But don’t come crawling back here bleeding and expect me to patch you up while pretending I don’t care, because next time, I might not answer.”

She hesitates before speaking. Her voice is small–shaky. Timid.
“I’m sorry.”

He stiffens, his back still turned to her as he lights a cigarette.
“What?”

“I said I’m sorry.”

“You don’t mean that. Don’t lie to me, Red. You said what you said.”

“Would I lie about something like this?”

He contemplates her words for a minute.
“People do, all the time. You should go find the next drop.”
