Detective Lexi: The Case of The Missing Sprinkles
By Kai B.
Chapter OneA disinterested-looking blonde woman with the most amazing blue eyes was sitting down at an old brown cluttered desk. She was relaxing in her disheveled office, bored out of her mind. She was a detective and had been a great one for many years. However, she somewhat dreaded her job. You see, there aren’t many cases to solve in the city in which she resides. Usually, the cases she did solve were boring ones like “The Case of The Missing Sock.” Or “The Case of The Mysterious Wet Paint Drying.” The woman adjusted the tag on her grey suit. It read the words, “Detective Lexi.” Lexi sighed inwardly and checked her old pocket watch. “Only 1:00 in the afternoon? It feels like it’s nighttime…” She thought to herself. She was somewhat starting to consider going home early for the day since there wasn’t much to do. That was until a frantic knocking sounded from the office door. The noise was so loud and aggressive that Lexi thought that the door was going to collapse. “Come in,” she said, thinking that the newest case that she was going to crack was going to be just as boring as all the others that she had solved. Suddenly, the door swung open revealing a tall, beautiful woman wearing jewels and pearls. So many of them, that it looked like they were weighing her down. She dramatically stated in a loud and booming voice, “Please! Someone, please help me! My award-winning show cat, Sprinkles has run away!” Lexi sighed, “Alright, alright, calm down, Ma’am. What is your name, and do you have any idea as to what may have happened to ‘Sprinkles’?” The woman said in the same loud manner, “My name is Abigail, and I don’t have the slightest clue as to where she could be! I’m so scared because I found wet paw prints and her diamond-studded collar by her food bowl when I went to fill it up.”
Chapter Two
Abigail led Lexi to a colossal mansion as they stood at the front door, Lexi gasped, “Whoa… is this your home?” Abigail responded, “Actually, no. This is Sprinkles’s home. My home is next door.” Abigail pointed to the even bigger mansion right next door to the mansion that they were standing in front of. Abigail reached into her pocket and pulled out a key, it was beautiful. It was incrusted with diamonds and emeralds. Abigail took it and unlocked the door. “Come in! Please wipe your feet off before you go inside!” Doing so, Lexi walked inside and waited for Abigail to tell her the whereabouts of the pawprints. Instead, Abigail told her the history of how her fortune came to be. “My cat Sprinkles is a pure-bred Siamese. She has won so many pet contests that I can’t even remember how many! Would you believe that she used to be a stray cat? When I first found her, she was a sad sight to see. This poor creature was extremely skinny and just covered with fleas. So, I took her in, fed her, and brushed her coat a bit. We bonded as soon as we met! A few years later, I realized my cat was so beautiful that I might have a shot at the pet contest that was being arranged at that time. So, I took my little darling and signed her up. She won hands down! And the prize was two thousand dollars…” Lexi had already tuned Abigail out. She had found a trail. She took her magnifying glass and inspected it. “Hmm.” She murmured out loud. “A trail of cream cat fur?” Abigail stopped talking almost immediately. “You found a clue?” Lexi responded, “Yes. Come here.” Abigail obeyed. Lexi pointed to the trail of fur. “Let’s follow that trail. It might lead to where Sprinkles went. Both Lexi and Abigail followed the feline’s trail of hair up to the attic. Lexi scanned the attic until her eyes locked on a window. She walked up to the window and looked at it carefully. “Hmm. The window doesn’t have a lock on it.” She pressed her hand on it, and it opened. “A window that pushes open…” This would be an easy escape route if a cat wanted to get out. Lexi rushed out of the attic and instantly left the mansion with Abigail closely following her, asking her annoying questions every other second. “Do you know where Sprinkles is yet? Where do you think Sprinkles is? Are we there yet?” Lexi sighed inwardly. At this very moment, she knew it was going to be a very long day.
Chapter Three
Lexi walked to the side of the mansion where the window was. She examined the grass right below the window. She thought to herself, “Hmm. The blades of the grass are bent down like something has been standing on it. Lexi looked around a bit more and found some more fur trailing away from the mansion. Abigail trailed her as though she was a baby duck following its mother asking the same annoying questions that she was asking earlier. “Where did Sprinkles go? Why would she ever run away? Why won’t you hurry up?” Lexi gritted her teeth in frustration. All the questions that Abigail was asking weren’t getting Lexi any closer to solving the case. Lexi looked around some more until she found some pawprints this time. She showed the pawprints to Abigail so she would stop talking and pay attention. Lexi pointed her finger at the trail of cat tracks. Both Lexi and Abigail followed the trail to an alleyway. “This is a dead end. There is no way that Sprinkles could be here.” Abigail’s eyes started tearing up. “Am I never going to see my precious cat again…?” Lexi didn’t know what to do so she decided to comfort Abigail a bit by placing her hand on her shoulder and murmuring, “There, there It’ll be alright…” Until Lexi heard a faint mewing. A whisper, even. Abigail was sobbing too loudly to hear it. But for some reason, Lexi could. She called out, “Here, Sprinkles… are you here girl?” Almost immediately as though it was responding, a loud meowing could be heard from… “The walls? No. The trashcan? No. Wait…” Lexi thought. She scanned the alleyway until her eyes landed upon a cardboard box. She hurried over to it and lifted it… “What in the…Aww… So cute!” She murmured. “Turns out, Sprinkles had adopted a puppy!” There she was lying there snuggling a tiny brown Chihuahua puppy trying to keep it warm. Lexi picked up the two little rascals and gave them the biggest hug that she has ever given in her life! She then turned and showed them to Abigail who was still sobbing uncontrollably, unaware of what was happening right before her very eyes. Abigail wiped her eyes upon seeing her precious cat. She took Sprinkles out of Lexi’s hand and said “Oh my goodness I missed you so much, my little darling! Don’t ever run away again you naughty cat! And I see you made a new little friend!” Upon saying that, Abigail put Sprinkles down and picked up the adorable little puppy. “I guess we’re taking you home! But what will I call you? I think I’ll call you…Cocoa, yeah…Cocoa…I like that!” Lexi walked away from the happy reunion and thought to herself, “Yes…Another win for Detective Lexi…This was an exciting case and the most fun that I have had in a very long time…The case of the missing Sprinkles has been solved!”
Conclusion
Lexi once again found herself sitting in her office, bored. Ever since the Missing Sprinkles case, she hasn’t found herself solving anything as heart wrenching as this one. Lexi yawned and looked out the window. Suddenly, her phone rang. She picked it up and said, “Hello?” A voice responded by saying, “Hello? Is this Detective Lexi? Listen. It’s me.” Lexi lifted her eyebrows in confusion. “Me… You sound crazy…Who are you?” The person on the phone didn’t respond for several minutes. “Don’t ask who I am when you already know. What’s important is we know each other, and I need your help, fast!”
