Don't turn your hobby into your job
-
I’m a furry artist. Ever since I was young, I always dreamed of being an amazing artist, and in the recent few years, I discovered the magical ‘Freelancer Artist’
I felt so inspired by how artists can make money off of commissions so easily, I wanted to try it for myself.
Every day, I practiced hard to improve my art, and here I am now.
About a year ago was the first time I opened up commissions and everything was going well.
After a while, the hobby that makes you happy slowly turned into a boring, non-stop job you dread doing every day, and drawing is slowly losing its magic for me, at least for the commissions.Don’t get me wrong, I still have fun and lots of relief at seeing the final products of my art, but every day I am always stressing about art that I have to get done for other people, so bad to the point where it’s affected other parts of my day.
Before you go around and state “Oh well you can just take a break”
No. No, I can’t. All of my stuff is weeks overdue, and I’ve already taken a few days off, but I’m always stressed about going back to work afterward.
This was originally gonna be a shitpost, but I felt like I should point this out
I’m not gonna fix anything here I’m too stressed augh
-
Thats why I left Toyhouse, all the art trades and commissions caught up to me and now i don’t even want to draw for anyone else anymore. it lost it’s magic for me. im sorry you’re going through the same thing, i love your art
-
@finneass I just recently go a new TH account because I need it to manage some of the characters and trades I’m doing right now
to be honest, I still tolerate doing it, because it gives me something to do and I genuinely enjoy doing it
but it really stresses me out
one of the main reasons i don’t stick around in many social media platforms as art is because I couldn’t manage drawing something every day just for people to look at it and then forget about it seconds later
all that time wasted lmao hell no
-
Goofbread🍌😸 thats why i dont do comms anymore lol
-
Definitely. I’m sorry to hear about your rough experience.
-
Goofbread🍌😸 I understand the stress of getting things done on time and even the guilt of not doing it fast enough. I know you said you’re not looking to fix things, but I wouldnt mind helping you out. I have been photoshopping for many years and and if you need someone to help manage your tasks, Im skilled at that too.
You’re right about taking a break not fixing anything. It doesnt solve that you’re still behind. But if you’re overdue with you projects, it’s likely you’re not giving yourself enough time to do them. For the future, I wouldnt do more than what you think you can do in a certain amount of time. It is hard to not double and triple book when art is due, but it is much better than stressing yourself out on a due date.

@Duchess It’s alright, I really just need to get to work, I’m doing 1/2 drawings per day, and I have like… 10 commissioners at the same time. it’s pretty stressful.
everyone knows what I’m going through and they all understand and are very patient with me, however i just wanna make sure I get this over with
I’m usually able to manage everything on my own, but I bit off a little more than i could chew this time
-
Goofbread🍌😸 Yeah, everyone bites off a little more than they can chew sometimes. I am sure you’ll be able to get it all done. Just relax and turn on some music and grab a hot drink while you do it, maybe? That usually helps me focus to get more done.
-
@Duchess Yeah, I’ve been doing that, however my parents have been limiting my time on there and they’re never listening to me
But I’m going to get it doneand I’m almost there <3
-
Goofbread🍌😸 Aw, that’s unfortunate. You’re doing something really cool for other people, it’s the least they could do is allow you some freedom.
