PROLOGUE.
Within this world lies a great power, placed within those unlucky enough to be born human. In a universe where elves dominate the world and lead by monarchy, there are chosen protectors to keep the unity that links each unique breed as a people. With great power comes great responsibility, and none other than the Elements can relate to that statement more. Each one of them are born a condemned human that struggles to fight off the burden the world placed on them.
.
.
.In the labyrinth of halls that weaved and curled throughout Elemental Boarding, smoke surrounded and clouded through every nook and cranny it could manage to slip into, its presence a mark of death to each and every person in the school. While the students slept peacefully, they were oblivious to the danger that would soon turn fatal for all of them.
.
.
.CHAPTER ONE.
It was the dead of night when I awoke, the grandfather clock’s chimes a testament to the late hour. As I blinked away the fog of sleep from my eyes, the smell of burning wood filled my lungs to the brim. I coughed violently, my fist pounding my chest to ease my aching throat. Each thump elicited another tear in my eyes, making my vision blurry as I willed my legs to swing off of my bed, planting them firmly on the floor.
Without thinking, nor even breathing, I stood and headed straight for the front door of the dorm and placed my hand against the handle, ready to protest against whoever was making that stench. I recoiled immediately. The metal was blazing hot, making the skin of my palm a vibrant red. I cursed under my breath, trying to shake the burn off fruitlessly.
The next point of thought was my roommate, Sacra. Was she still asleep? Had she noticed the smoke practically fumigating our room from under the crack of the door? My feet flew beneath me as I approached her bedroom door, not knocking as I yanked it open. My breath caught at the sight.
The room was the same as mine, yet the bed and sheets were ruffled as if she’d left in a panic, the closet creaked open with clothes strewn across the floor. It wasn’t just this that made my gasp. As my gaze drifted towards the window, a bright blue raging fire distorted the air around it and charred the bottom of the curtains that were billowing in its wake.
It took me only a few moments to diagnose the situation. She must’ve noticed before I had and exited through the window, since the front door was clearly blocked. Yet… she hadn’t told me. I bit my lip hard, the metallic taste of blood slowly dripping into my mouth. Panic seeped through my veins as I thought: What can I do? Trapped on all sides…
I didn’t have much time left. I had to jump, or give up my life. The fire made me anxious, the sound of my heart beating rapidly in my ears not helping. I squeezed my eyes as tight as they would let me and tried to push each probing thought out of my mind. As I broke away from my thoughts, I took a running stance and bolted, jumping through the broken window and into that hell. It took only a few seconds for the burning to start, charring my skin and my hair.
As I fell down from the second story, I tried to remember the training I had gone through so vigorously ever since I enrolled. I tucked my knees to my chest, landing with a thud on the ground and rolling. The dirt absorbed the blue flames still sticking to my body as I slowed to a stop, and I gasped in pain; adrenaline rush over, the ache now stuck to me as I struggled to get up again.
My knees were scraped raw, blood dripping down my leg as I staggered to find anyone that was still here, still alive. As soon as the pounding of my heart softened, I heard them. Faint screams of help as flames engulfed their life force. Despite myself, I began to run to their aid.
It seemed I was far too late.cliffhanger! aha ther’s more but i’m not telling nanana boo boo
