Mommy issues. How I know I have them. TW: Mommy issues
-
All of the Yellow Highlighted text is all the ones I struggle with, with my mom. Or just ones I struggle with myself with. It’s damn near all of them.
“Mommy issues” is a somewhat informal term people often use to describe emotional struggles or patterns that arise due to complicated or unhealthy relationships with one’s mother. It doesn’t necessarily mean there was outright abuse—it could stem from a variety of issues, such as neglect, overprotection, emotional manipulation, or inconsistent behavior from a mother.
The symptoms or effects of having “mommy issues” can vary, but here are some common signs people might experience:
1. Difficulty with Boundaries
Trouble setting and respecting boundaries, either with their mother or in other relationships, might be a sign of “mommy issues.” You could find yourself feeling overly dependent or, conversely, distant and avoidant.
2. Fear of Rejection or Abandonment
If your mother was inconsistent with affection, neglectful, or emotionally unavailable, you might develop a fear of being abandoned or rejected in adult relationships. This could manifest as anxiety in romantic relationships or friendships.
3. Low Self-Esteem
Growing up with a mother who criticized you frequently or failed to offer emotional support might lead to self-doubt or feeling unworthy. You might seek validation from others or have a hard time believing in your own value.
4. Unresolved Anger or Resentment
If there was emotional neglect or manipulation, it could lead to pent-up anger towards your mother. You might find yourself triggered by things that remind you of her or even distancing yourself emotionally.
5. Seeking Maternal Approval
An intense need for approval or validation from your mother could be a sign of “mommy issues,” as you might continuously seek her approval despite any negative impact it has on your life or sense of self.
- Difficulty Trusting Other Women
If your mother was emotionally abusive or neglectful, you may find it challenging to trust other women, particularly maternal figures, or find it hard to form healthy relationships with them.
7. Relationship Struggles
Affected patterns of attachment in romantic relationships (like being overly dependent or avoiding intimacy) can sometimes trace back to how you were treated by your mother or your perception of her.
- Overcompensating or Overachieving
Some people with “mommy issues” might push themselves excessively, trying to achieve perfection to gain their mother’s approval or to avoid criticism, even as adults.
9. People-Pleasing Behavior
If your mom was very critical or demanding, you might have learned to try to please others in an attempt to gain love or acceptance, even if it means sacrificing your own needs.
- Confusion About Maternal Love
You might struggle to understand what genuine, healthy love feels like if you never received consistent care and affection from your mother.
